Food-safe coatings for wooden kitchenware: FDA, LFGB and EN 71-3

From wooden spoons and spatulas to chopping boards and serving trays, wooden kitchenware is in high demand across Europe and North America, where natural, sustainable and safe products are the market norm.

But to make wooden accessories genuinely export-ready, the finish has to satisfy a compliance desk as well as a design team. A beautiful coating that cannot document its safety will not clear customs, and it will not clear a buyer’s quality process either.

The standards that actually get enforced

  • FDA 21 CFR 175.300 — United States Food and Drug Administration
  • LFGB — Germany
  • EN 71.3 — European safety standard for food contact materials

These are the three you will be asked about. Knowing which market a piece is destined for tells you which one matters.

Technically approved finishes

Several finish types are widely used and accepted for food contact, each with different characteristics:

Tung oil — deep penetration and excellent water resistance. The traditional choice for chopping boards.

Food-grade linseed oil — a natural finish with moderate water repellence.

Beeswax and mineral oil blends — ideal for smooth surfaces and pieces that will be maintained regularly.

Modern hybrid coatings — water-based, compliant PU or acrylic finishes for higher durability while staying food-safe. Also available as a blend of tung oil with orange oil and beeswax.

The hybrids are worth attention if durability is the constraint. Oils are beautiful but they need re-application, and a retail buyer may not want to explain maintenance to a customer.

Why it matters beyond the paperwork

  • Protects the wood from swelling, cracking and microbial growth
  • Survives use — regular washing and direct food contact
  • Opens markets — aligning with global safety regulation is what gets you shelf space and keeps buyers confident

A practical note

Compliance is a property of the whole system, not just the topcoat. If you use a stain, a sealer and a topcoat, all three are in contact with the chain that ends at food. Specify the system, not the last coat.

We formulate customised solutions for export-ready wooden kitchenware designed to meet aesthetic, functional and compliance standards together. Safety is not an optional extra on these products. It is the standard.
